Listen to Children
Give Children a Chance to Share Their Concerns
Jewish Family Service administers the Listen to Children Program in the elementary and middle schools within the Livingston Public School system, with dedicated funding from the Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee (LMAC), the Livingston PT Council and the United Way of North Essex.
Adult Volunteers Are Paired with a Child
The Listen to Children program pairs a warm, accepting older adult volunteer with a Livingston elementary or middle school child on a one-to-one basis. The child-listener relationship allows a child to share conversations, joys, experiences and concerns in a caring, safe environment. The “listener” often functions as a surrogate grandparent and provides a non-judgemental, secure sounding board for children to express concerns or anxieties.
Meet a Child Once a Week in School
Older adult listeners meet with a child once a week in the school setting. The older adult is screened and trained by a JFS social worker and the child is referred by a school guidance counselor, teacher or parent.
Get Ongoing Training & Support from JFS
Listeners are expected to attend monthly meetings staffed by a JFS social worker which provide ongoing training and education in areas as bullying, peer pressure, or life challenges.
